Research: Software defined networking (SDN) for resilient CPS

Software-Defined Networking (SDN) is an emerging architecture that is dynamic, manageable, cost-effective, and adaptable, making it ideal for the high-bandwidth, dynamic nature of today’s applications. This architecture decouples the network control and forwarding functions enabling the network control to become directly programmable and the underlying infrastructure to be abstracted for applications and network services.
In the following SDN structure, Application and Control Layer are managed by software, Infrastructure Layer is composed of actual network equipment, and communication between network control layer and data layer is done through Openflow protocol.
Using SDN, our laboratory researches networks that guarantee network performance in a variety of applications (trains, IoT) and provide flexible responses to network attacks. We design virtual networks using MIninet with open source based SDN controllers such as ONOS and Opendaylight. Also, we build up real testbed and develop algorithm to measure and improve performance of networks using SDN controller and OpenV Switch, an open source multi-layer virtual switch supporting OpenFlow protocol in Raspberry pi. In addition, we are conducting research to flexibly deal with attacks by constructing a network environment for CBTC(Communication-Based Train Control) using actual SDN.
